Being a lifelong fingerstyle guitarist, John has searched for decades to find the 'perfect' thumbpick. Of course, this is subjective, but the main features are pretty much the same for everyone. We all want a thumbpick that fits well, is comfortable, and stays on the thumb without cutting off the circulation. Then we want a pick that doesn't break in the weak 'crook' area, and one that generally wears well. We also want the best sounding tone we can get. After that it's just a matter of personal taste about gauge (thicker picks sounding fatter vs. thinner picks being more flexible). Lastly, many of us occasionally use the thumbpick as a straight pick for single note playing. Here the shape of the pick point is critical so that it moves in both directions without getting hung up. John's answer to all of this is the Fred Kelly Delrin 'Slick Pick'.
The only problem John has had with suggesting these picks is that they are hard to find. Even when you do locate them in a store, the store will only carry maybe 3 of Fred's picks out of the dozens that he makes. It's not John's intent to compete with stores or to carry Fred's whole line, but simply to make his favorite picks available to his followers. Check them out! |
